FAQs

Application

Once you have submitted your application, the team at LEARN academy will review it and be in touch within a week of your submission date. If we feel it is a good fit we will ask you in for an interview. It is an informal interview. A chance for us to get to know you and for you to ask any questions you might have about the coding course. We know that it is vital to your success to find the course that is best for you and your learning needs. We use the interview to find out if we are the best fit for you! If at that point we both agree that it is a good fit we will invite you to secure a seat in the class of your choice.
Code school students must be 18 years old by the date of the first class as we are not legally able to accommodate minors.
One of the things we look for in an application is – did we get to know you? It’s almost impossible for us to get to know a candidate if each of the essay answers is only two sentences long. It doesn’t need to be a novel, but before you submit, check to make sure your personality is coming out in your writing.
Yes! LEARN academy’s live-remote courses allow students to take our courses from just about anywhere in the United States. However, we are not able to support International students at this time.
Students who are accepted and enrolled in the 4 month bootcamp are required to attend and participate in a workshop, called Jumpstart, offered by LEARN academy prior to the first day of the program. These workshops are free for students and included in the price of the tuition for the bootcamp. LEARN academy offers multiple workshops leading up to the start of class that students can sign up for.
Absolutely! We love chatting with potential partners and students. It is always best to make an appointment first so we can make sure someone is available to answer your questions. You can email us hello@learnacademy-wp-production.notch8.cloud.
There isn’t really a typical student at LEARN academy. Most have not taken computer science classes in college, although some have. Some have not gone to college at all, but many have undergraduate degrees in something other than computer science. Past graduates have been in the entertainment industry, waitresses, massage therapists, in the military, and just about anything else you can think of.

Jumpstart

Jumpstart is our weekend program that is required for each of our students. It covers the fundamentals of HTML, CSS, and Javascript – and you’ll finish up with a fully coded website of your very own! It also allows you to get familiar with our virtual classroom and instructional style. It is taught by our instructors and often you will get to know some current students as they help out as teaching assistants.
You’ll need to fill out the Jumpstart application, and as far as equipment is concerned: a computer, internet access, and willingness to learn and focus over the course of the weekend!
LEARN’s live-remote coding programs are exclusively available to students who are residents of the United States. To be eligible for the programs we have, students must be located in the United States for the duration of the program. All of the programs offered at LEARN are live-remote and operate in the Pacific time zone.

The short answer is yes! The long answer is that completing the weekend program prior to the full time program allows you to get to know how our classroom runs. You get to experience the instructional style and feel of the classroom firsthand, as well as learn how we communicate and work with one another. Having Jumpstart as a requirement means that we can ensure that our students have a baseline of knowledge and understanding, and you’ll get to know staff, instructors, current students, and alumni.

Schedule + Classes

LEARN academy’s full-time course is Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Students spend the first 12 weeks working in the online classroom and the final 4 weeks in their remote programming internship.
LEARN academy’s 4 month bootcamp is Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
We have had students hold part-time jobs while attending the coding bootcamps at LEARN academy. They tell us that it’s not too bad if your work is on the weekend, but working more than one night per week is really tough. It is tough but possible.
We offer students an online classroom experience where they can interact with the instructor and fellow classmates in real time. Lectures are also live and students are expected to be participating in the class from 9am-5pm (we of course provide breaks and a lunch period).
Students enrolled at LEARN academy receive a loaned MacBook Air for the duration of the 4-month program. Students are required to sign a loan agreement and we will ship laptops to students. It is a requirement to use the provided laptop to ensure that all students have the same environment setup to avoid conflicts. This also greatly simplifies the process for instructors troubleshooting work environments. After completing the 4-month program, students are required to return the loaned MacBook Air.
We keep a student/teacher ratio of less that 10/1 , so 1 teacher for 10 students, 2 for 11-20, 3 for 21-24. We cap our coding classes at 24 students max.
If a student requires additional attention or assistance of any kind, LEARN academy has several resources available to ensure that every student is in clear understanding of the topic or lesson. This includes dedicated one on one time with our instructor after classroom hours.
We use pair programming in our everyday instruction. This means you will be working along side another student, sharing a screen and working through the exercises together. We do this for two reasons. First, pair programming is very common in the work place and it’s important that you, as a junior developer, know how to work in that environment. Second, it is a wonderful tool to help you retain information. While you pair, you are talking through the code you spend your day both learning and teaching which helps you understand the material better with your pair programming partner.
At LEARN we start the process early. Throughout the course we help you craft your resume, refine your interview techniques, assemble your portfolio, and build your network. We know that your network is one of your biggest assets, so we help you from the very beginning. We invite people from the community into the virtual classroom to speak regularly, we host meetups virtually & promote workshops and meetups that might be of interest. We regularly post spotlights on our company partners who take on interns (and have been known to hire them!). All of this is in preparation for the job hunt that will start once you’ve finished the course. That being said we continue to assist with all of these things after you’ve finished the course. We also keep you up to date with job postings and continue to help you build your network. Our Career Services Manager will work with you until you find a job – and will continue to be available to you for your entire career!
As a Junior Developer, the starting salary can roughly be around $45,000 to $65,000. This is a wide range that can depend on the position, where the job is located, as well as the applicant’s experience and background. Typically after 2-3 years in the industry and role, the salary can get closer to $75,000 to $95,000.

Costs + Financing

There is no cost to submit an application! If you have been accepted into the program, you will be required to pay a deposit of $500 to guarantee your seat. This deposit payment will be applied to your remaining tuition due.
Enrolled students are required to pay the tuition by the first day of class. We offer a handful of Financing Options that allow for you to pay the tuition off by means of a loan in the instance that you are unable to pay it all at once. You can read more about financing options for students here.
There are a few different ways to fund your coding bootcamp experience. We offer multiple scholarships and discounts, work with a number of financing partners, and accept up-front payments. You can read more about financing options for students here https://wp.learnacademy.org/financing/

If you have any questions about financing, send us an email (hello@learnacademy.org).

Yes, we accept Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
We want this to be simple and fair.

LEARN Academy shall refund 100 percent of the amount paid for institutional charges, less a reasonable deposit not to exceed two hundred fifty dollars ($250) if notice of cancellation is made through attendance at the first class session, or the seventh class day after enrollment, whichever is later. After the seventh day of class, the refund is calculated based on the following formulation for the daily charge and calculated in the following manner; (total institutional charge, divided by the number of days or hours in the program), multiplied by the number of days the student attended, or was scheduled to attend, prior to withdrawal.Refunds will be issued within 45 days of approval. If financing with a financing partner, LEARN will abide by the refund policies of that lender when issuing the refund. Most agreements with LEARN third-party financing partners state that the money goes back to them in the event of a refund.

VA (Vet Tec)

LEARN academy is approved by the VA for the VET TEC program. The next step is to obtain your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA. This COE must be a recent copy provided by the VA within the last 60 days to ensure your eligibility is accurate and funding is available.

Once you have received your COE, please apply with LEARN academy. During the application process, you will be able to upload your COE. Please make sure you have that available; you will need your COE in order to move forward in the enrollment process. After you submit your application, you will then need to schedule your interview.

The application process with the VA can take up to 30 days, so we urge you to submit your application with LEARN academy sooner than later as our cohorts tend to fill up quickly. Once you receive your COE from the VA please forward a copy to Kumba McGill so that she can process your application.
In order to process your application we would need a recent copy of your COE, ideally if it was provided by the VA in the last 60 days. This is to ensure that your eligibility is still accurate and funding is available.
Yes, but at the online rate. LEARN academy is an online program and does not offer in-person learning at this time.
